Every once in a while, there are grassroots movements encouraging consumers to buy local. These efforts range in success, but often don’t last long as the market corrects itself and people have to go back into super saving mode, but we’ve seen that with a more established, structured and supportive campaign with multiple partners, the success is long lasting.
Currently, Kiers Marketing is honoured to be the agency behind the SupportFredLocal digital media campaign along with the project partners, Ignite, Fredericton Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Fredericton and Business Fredericton North. The goal was and is to continue to support and promote our local Fredericton region economy that was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic through 2023 and we’re off to an incredible start!
The benefits of supporting local businesses extend far beyond convenience and customer service. When it comes to Atlantic Canada, this region thrives on its local businesses. 97.9% of ALL employers in Atlantic Canada in 2022 were classified as a small business while a further 1.9% were medium sized. By choosing to buy locally, you can contribute to the overall well-being of your community and stimulate the economy more than you realise.
The money you spend on those small businesses doesn’t go back to Ontario or corporate headquarters somewhere in Texas, it goes back into our communities. The small business owner you just spent 20% more at for your coffee will now turn around and either further invest that 20% extra in their business or, more likely, take that money and pay their taxes, buy their childrens’ school supplies or donate to their favourite local charity.
So, why should we keep buying locally in such rough economic times as 2023?
Strengthening the Local Economy
Buying local supports the economy of Atlantic Canada by ensuring that more money stays within the community. According to recent studies, for every dollar spent at a local business, up to 45% of it stays within the local economy, compared to only 9% when spent at a national chain. This circulation of money translates into increased employment opportunities, higher wages, and a thriving business ecosystem.
Fostering Unique Communities:
Local businesses contribute to the distinct character and charm of Atlantic Canadian communities. Whether it’s a family-owned restaurant, a boutique shop, or a craft brewery, these businesses often reflect the local culture, heritage, and values. By patronizing local establishments, you help preserve and enhance the authenticity and diversity that make Atlantic Canada a special place to live and visit.
Reducing Environmental Impact:
Choosing local businesses often means reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation and logistics. By buying products and services close to home, you support shorter supply chains, which require less fuel for transportation. This commitment to sustainability contributes to preserving the beautiful natural landscapes that make Atlantic Canada so unique.
Encouraging Innovation and Entrepreneurship:
The region also boasts a vibrant entrepreneurial spirit, with countless individuals and small businesses taking risks and pursuing their dreams. By buying local, you support these innovators and contribute to the growth of the regional economy. Additionally, local businesses often foster creativity and innovation, as they are more likely to experiment with unique products, services, and experiences that may not be found elsewhere.
Building Personal Connections:
When you shop locally, you have the opportunity to interact directly with business owners and employees who are passionate about what they do. They possess in-depth knowledge of their products and can offer personalized recommendations and exceptional customer service. These connections not only enhance your shopping experience but also strengthen the sense of community we hold so dear here.
Buying local in Atlantic Canada is more than just a trend; it’s a conscious choice that has significant positive implications for the region. By supporting local businesses, you contribute to a stronger economy, foster unique communities, reduce environmental impact, encourage innovation, and build personal connections. The statistics speak for themselves, highlighting the tremendous value of choosing local in Atlantic Canada. So, the next time you need a product or service, consider looking to your local businesses. Together, we can create a vibrant and thriving Atlantic Canadian community.
